Let's be honest about how most small business owners think about web accessibility. It's the thing their web agency mentioned once, that they nodded along to, and then quietly moved down the priority list in favour of a new hero image or a social media integration. It sounds like a legal obligation — which it partially is — and legal obligations rarely feel exciting.
But here's the thing: accessibility isn't just about not getting sued. Done properly, it's about not leaving money on the table. And we have a case study that makes that argument better than any compliance document ever could.
The Business, the Problem, and the Number That Changed Everything
The business in question is a specialist equipment supplier based in Surrey — we're keeping their name out of this at their request, but the figures are real and verified. They'd been trading online for around four years, had a professionally designed website, decent SEO, and a reasonable conversion rate. On paper, things looked fine.

And a colour scheme that looked lovely on a designer's calibrated monitor was failing contrast ratio standards badly enough to make text genuinely difficult to read for users with moderate visual impairments.
None of this had been flagged. The site had passed a basic automated scan with flying colours. Automated scans, for the record, catch roughly 30% of real-world accessibility issues. The rest require human eyes — and, ideally, human eyes that know what they're looking for.
Putting a Number on Invisible Exclusion
Here's where the revenue figure comes in, and it requires a bit of methodology to make sense of.
Around 22% of people in the UK are living with some form of disability, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics. Not all of those will involve digital access barriers, but a meaningful proportion will — visual impairments, motor difficulties, cognitive differences that make cluttered or poorly structured interfaces genuinely hard to use.
Using the client's existing traffic data, average order value, and conversion rate, we modelled what a conservative 15% of their potential audience being effectively excluded from completing a purchase might mean in annual revenue terms. The figure landed at just over £40,000. That's not a projection of what they'd gain from a redesign. That's an estimate of what they were already losing, every year, from customers who arrived at the site and couldn't complete a transaction.

The Audit Framework We Used (And You Can Steal)
We're not precious about methodology. If this framework helps another Surrey business find and fix the same issues, that's a good outcome. Here's the structure we follow:
Layer 1 — Automated baseline. Run the site through tools like WAVE, Axe, or Lighthouse. Document every flag. Understand that this is your starting point, not your finish line.
Layer 2 — Keyboard navigation audit. Unplug your mouse. Tab through every page, every form, every interactive element. Can you reach everything? Can you tell where you are? Can you complete a purchase or an enquiry without touching a pointer device?
Layer 3 — Screen reader walkthrough. Use NVDA (free, Windows) or VoiceOver (built into macOS and iOS). Navigate the site as a user with a visual impairment would. Do images make sense without being seen? Do forms announce their purpose? Does the page structure follow a logical reading order?
Layer 4 — Colour and contrast. Use the WebAIM Contrast Checker. Every text element should meet at minimum the WCAG AA standard — a contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text. Check your CTAs, your form labels, your navigation, your footer copy.
Layer 5 — Cognitive accessibility review. This is the softest layer but arguably the most impactful for general audiences. Is the language plain and direct? Are error messages helpful? Is the layout consistent across pages? Is there enough visual breathing room that the interface doesn't feel overwhelming?
Before and After: The Metrics That Matter
Six months after the remediation work was completed, the client's data showed a 19% increase in completed checkouts from mobile users — a demographic that skews heavily toward touch and keyboard-based navigation. Form completion rates increased by 23%. And the volume of 'had trouble with the website' customer service calls dropped to near zero.
